Cafe Welcomes Parenting Breakfast Club

This past Wednesday the cafe hosted a new morning group dedicated to Parents and their children.
The group will make exclusive use of the cafe Wednesdays through Fridays, weekly, from 8:30am until 11:00am.
Except for a few blankets on the floor to cushion knees of crawling toddlers it's pretty much the same cafe as usual.
The idea is to provide parents with a local child-safe setting to relax and rejuvenate.

Brave new PBC members Jen (and Vyva), and Kim (and Lulu) (left-to-right) were two of the first Astoria parents to test the waters at the newly formed morning Group.

First time parents can discuss parenting experiences with veterans and everyone can sit back in a comfortable chair for a couple of hours and enjoy a morning latte.

Thanks to everyone who was able to join us for the first week!

Whiskey Dregs To Host Insider Art Event at Cafe

Bring your art...whatever in the world it is and share it with everyone this Friday at Freeze Peach Cafe from 830-1100. If you write, bring some words. You play some music then play your worst. If you're an artist of any sort. Bring it in. We're doing an experiment and we want you to be the first.

We used to call it OPEN MIC until the loincloths came off and we realized that every one has some funny words to sell. Now the mic is live and hot and the space is active.

The word on the street is getting louder. Nothing is toned down. Nothing is limited. Join our lab rat movement. A free secret will be given to all who come. Think of them as messages from fortune cookies. Bring some of your words, art, music, theater in exchange or bring a good sense of humor and money.

What is Freeze Peach

It's a cafe.
That's a place you go where you are likely to see some familiar faces from the neighborhood who you can hang out with and drink iced coffee with when your roommates are driving you nuts.
It's a computing environment.
That's a place that has WIFI. Part of the cafe's mission statement includes providing access to information. The cafe does this by providing access to the World Wide Web on personal computers as well as on computers provided by the cafe for public use. Currently we have one laptop available to anyone who wants to use it. We support open source software and 'free' software including the LINUX operating system. Currently the cafe uses UBUNTU.
It's a community space.
That is a place that sponsors the Hellgate CSA by facilitating the csa's weekly vegetable, fruit, and herb co-op pickup site. For more information on the Hellgate CSA check out their website.
It's a teashop.
That's a place you can buy loose tea to brew at home as well as tea that has been brewed for you by one of the cafe's talented baristas. Tea shops are places that tend to heighten awareness by serving beverages such as tea that are naturally stimulating, and with complex flavors that encourage the drinker to 'reach out' with their senses.
It has a new PARENTING BREAKFAST CLUB forming that will meet before opening hours for Astoria parents to socialize and enjoy the cafe in an unrestricted private setting. The new group will meet Wednesdays through Fridays between 8:30am and 11:00am. For further information or to signup send us an email at:
info@freezepeach.org
SO:
The cafe is a lot of things. It is something different to every person, potentially who patronizes it's Astoria location on 29th St. The cafe is also what it's patrons make of it.
Join us at the Freeze Peach to help us find the answers...

Spring Fever

Yeah.
We know.
The blog has been kinda MIA for awhile.
Hey. Sometimes I get the feeling if I take too long to blink in this city I might open my eyes to find myself staring into the mirror at an old man with a grey (or white) beard.

It's Spring. Time for change. Time for things to come back to life.

There are going to be some new menu additions, new seating, new airconditioning, new faces...
There are going to be some new food items on the menu in June.
We are making some improvements in the kitchen. We are going to add some newer computers.
A new awning is in the works...

Hours have been going through a period of flux...

Prices are also in the process of revision. We are going to be including tax on the new menu which will be coming out in June. (Instead of adding tax at the register.)

We have a new manager/painter: Steven Falcon

Thanks to our customers who have been very forgiving in the midst of all the changes.

check out the freezepeach.org website for links to the calendar, menu, and other stuff:

Cafe Has a New Look and a New Feel

Just a note to say Thank You to Meesh for letting me post on this blog. I want to tell you how much nicer it is in here. There are more chairs, more lights, new tables, a new set up. In short it's better than ever.

My favorite drink is a Chai Latte. What makes it unique here is that there is no sugar (unless you want it). Try a Chai anywhere else and it usually comes out of a box with a predestined amount of sugar in it. They stick it in the espresso machine and froth it up.

Here it's real milk, real spices and you have a choice of sweeteners or no sweeteners. (Heck, you can even get Agave Nectar if you want).

In the early 1990's my mother went to India and described having Chai in a house boat in Kashmir. Kashmir was a lush beautiful place on the boarder of Pakistan then. The rift between Pakistan and India has descimated the earth there.

Back to the Chai she had. The spices were hand ground by the guy on the boat and in milk. It was the best hot drink she ever had. She even bought some of the spices from the guy. Not the same. My mother just moved to Boston but if she comes to New York to visit you can be sure I'll bring her back to Astoria and to Freeze Peach for her expert accessment.

Cafe Only Truly Safe Place to Hide from Evil

After several near trips raised eyebrows and caused one barista to trade lace-up sneakers for safer slip-on shoes a force-field of incense, lavender oil, and strategically placed cups of hot steaming tea is being implemented to keep the freeze peach safe from un-sympathetic supernatural phenomenon.

Sofar the rumors of a barely visible white-bearded shoester who giggles silently to himself as he unties shoelaces have not been verified by any credible photographs or video recordings.

Anyone who is able to capture the 'peach cobbler' on film will be rewarded with a free 20 oz. hot tea of their choosing.

One photograph, which has already mysteriously dissappeared, bears striking resemblance to a familiar painting by local artist Thomas McCann (on display at the cafe).

The artist, however swears that he has never seen 'the cobbler' nor noticed that his shoes suddenly became untied at the cafe. Instead, his portrait derives from a mannerist painting by El Greco on permanent display at the 'Met'...

Hmmm. Is the 'peach cobbler' actually a late renaissance mannerist masquerading as an image from his own painting...

Or...
has the little old 29th St. shoe repair man who vanished into thin air several years ago -leaving behind only a grape vine (man eating?) which covered the entire cieling of his abandoned shop -returned from Venice-in-the-sky to attempt to collect on unpaid orders...

whichever the case may be...

the cafe is not haunted by any white-bearded ghosts. any ghosts. not haunted.

but just to be certain - don't let your cups run dry or the candles go out!

Good thing none of the ACK (Astoria Crafty Knitty) regulars were present to witness the spectacle...
Although I must admit, at times, the knitters drift awfully close to that same seductive line.
Catch the spectacle. Catch the warm and fuzzy scene of ACK every Thursday, 8ish pm at the cafe.
